Extra & Co-Curricular Activities

SENIOR EXTRA & CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extra and co-curricular activities are one of the defining characteristics of a good independent school education; they enrich our pupils in a plethora of ways: building confidence, friendships, communication and teamwork; encouraging them to think in different, often more creative and independent ways, and giving them a sense of purpose and engagement in their lives beyond the classroom.

Our Extra-Curricular Programme has consistently been graded as excellent by ISI inspections and at Ryde we hope that all pupils will involve themselves in a range of activities at any level and we also have a number of pupils pursuing specific activities to a very high level.

We have a broad range of experiences on offer from creative writing groups, public speaking, Combined Cadet Force, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, to the Arts with big band music groups, drama productions, and orchestras.

Students readily enjoy these experiences and relish the unique opportunities that they are given to extend and expand their learning.

As well as the annual ski trip, French exchange visit, and music tour, there are the regular theatre trips, visits to exhibitions and museums, plus excursions to local colleges and universities.

These trips occur regularly and provide excellent opportunities for enrichment.

Many of our pupils have found that the extra-curricular activities they have pursued at school have not only given them skills for life but are looked on favourably on their UCAS applications.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Ryde School is a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Directly Licensed Centre, allowing us to deliver and authorise Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. It aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people.

Pupils start with the Bronze Award in Year 9, followed by Silver and Gold in Year 11 & 12 respectively. This is a rigorous programme that is enjoyed by pupils and on average 12 pupils a year travel to St James’ Palace to collect their Gold Award.

Combined Cadet Force

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has a long tradition at Ryde and is composed of two well established Service Sections: the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Ryde CCF provides a safe environment where cadets can develop their personal skills as well as their ability both to lead and  work in a team.

"Since joining in Year 5 I have always admired the sense of community and support that the school extends to each of their pupils, and the wider island community.

I also feel incredibly fortunate for the countless opportunities that have been offered to me, that go above and beyond the excellent academic education that we receive in our subjects.

Some of my fondest memories have stemmed from time that I have spent in the musicals, music concerts and sports teams, helping me to grow in confidence, not only as a student but also as a young adult.

Moving into the Sixth Form offered me a growing sense of freedom but with a feeling of responsibility to act as mature role models for other pupils."
