EXTRA & CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN RYDE SCHOOL SIXTH FORM

Extra and co-curricular activities are one of the defining characteristics of a good independent school education; they enrich our pupils in a plethora of ways: building confidence, friendships, communication and teamwork, encouraging them to think in different, often more creative and independent ways, and giving them a sense of purpose and engagement in their lives beyond the classroom.

Our Extra-Curricular programme has consistently been graded as excellent by ISI inspections and at Ryde we hope that all pupils will involve themselves in a range of activities at any level and we also have a number of pupils pursuing specific activities to a very high level.

We have a broad range of experiences on offer from creative writing groups, public speaking, Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to the Arts with big band music groups, drama productions, orchestras; students readily enjoy these experiences and relish the unique opportunities that they are given to extend and expand their learning.

As well as the annual ski trip, French exchange visit and music tour, there are the regular Theatre trips, visits to exhibitions and museums plus excursions to local colleges and universities.

These trips occur regularly and provide excellent opportunities for enrichment.

It aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people. Pupils start with the Bronze Award in Year 9, followed by Silver and Gold in Year 11 & 12 respectively.

This is a rigorous programme that is enjoyed by pupils and on average 12 pupils a year travel to St James’ Palace to collect their Gold Award.

Combined Cadet Force

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has a long tradition at Ryde and is composed of two well established Service Sections: the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Ryde CCF provides a safe environment where cadets can develop their personal skills as well as their ability both to lead and work in a team.

Role Models

Our Sixth Formers are role models and ambassadors; evolving, in our time with us, into independent and reliable citizens. They enrich our school with their active participation in the Careers Fair, the Global Rock competition, Young Enterprise, numerous school plays and concerts, charity events, open days and parents evenings.

As our year draws to an end, all our students take part in an enrichment and activities week – students are encouraged and challenged to learn a variety of new skills such as building go-karts, learning to cook or learning a new language; the options focused on the important skills increasingly appreciated by universities and employers.

We encourage them to join in with social events, meet as a whole Sixth Form in a social context, and we punctuate our busy year with whole Sixth Form challenges and games.

Many of our pupils have found that the extra-curricular activities they have pursued at school have not only given them skills for life but are looked on favourably on their UCAS applications.

"There seems to be something for everyone and if there is not there is always a member of staff or a student willing to start something new."
